6 Romantic Inns for Valentine’s Day

OPENER_Vday-InnsIt’s hard not to think “romantic” when you hear the word “inn,” and all six of these properties have romance in spades (hearts?). What’s more, they offer an aesthetic that’s completely true to their oh-so romantic surroundings. Several also have private cottages or cabins, on-site spas or spa services, and Valentine’s Day packages. All are the perfect choices for an indulgent couple’s getaway.

#1: Inn at Montchanin, Wilmington, DE

MontchaninThe setting is truly romantic: a private and very historic hamlet in the heart of the Brandywine Valley. Here, 11 restored 18th-century cottages house 28 guest rooms and suites. Rekindle things by booking one of the suites with a gas fireplace as part of the Village Romance Package (one-night stay, Champagne and chocolates on arrival, $25 breakfast voucher) or the Village Retreat Package (one-night stay, $25 breakfast and spa vouchers).

#2: Paradise Inn, Key West, FL

ParadiseInnThere aren’t any packages here—indeed, over Valentine’s Day there’s a two-night minimum stay—but you don’t need them to find romance in one of the cigar-makers’ cottages or the rooms in the Bahamian-style houses, with their breezy porches and contemporary furnishings and fixtures. Sit poolside surrounded by fragrant gardens. Walk hand in hand through Key West’s Old Town or along a nearby beach. And this place provides a good excuse for leaving the kids at home: many of the quarters require guests to be at least 18 years old.

#3: Inn and Spa at Cedar Falls, Logan, OH

CedarFallsThis little inn in the woods just southeast of Columbus acknowledges that there’s literally only so much room for celebrating on Valentine’s Day itself with three seasonal packages: the Early Bird Getaway (Feb. 7–8), the Valentine’s Day Special (Feb. 13), and the There’s Still Time Special (Feb. 21–22). And, year-round, there’s the Rekindle the Romance Package, too. Try to book one of the cozy cabins, and don’t forget to reserve a field-to-fork dinner in the restaurant and/or a couples’ massage in the spa.

#4: The Wickwood Inn, Saugatuck, MI

WickwoodInnThe singular décor and luxurious amenities in the 11 rooms and suites of this Colonial-style 1930s inn make it easy to get cozy with your significant other. So do the couples massages in the spa, the sumptuous brunches and evening hors d’oeuvres, and the strolls through artsy Saugatuck. The Valentine’s Day package here emphasizes food—especially chocolate.

#5: L’Auberge de Sedona, Sedona, AZ

SedonaWith an on-site Romance Boutique and Romance Concierge and an Amour Package (a night’s stay, generous restaurant credits, and Champagne and strawberries on arrival), Valentine’s Day seems to be celebrated year round here. If possible, book one of the cottage rooms with both a fireplace and a whirlpool tub. Definitely book a couples massage in the spa. It’s easy to find activities you both enjoy—whether that means hiking amid the red rocks or browsing Sedona’s galleries and boutiques.

#6: Simpson House Inn, Santa Barbara, CA

SimpsonHouseInnThe Romancing the Riviera Package, though luxurious, is pricey. But it’s easy enough to make your own “package,” given the choice of cozy, elegant rooms (offered at a variety price points) at this Victorian estate. It’s set right in chic Santa Barbara, along the oh-so-romantic-sounding American Riviera, so there’s plenty of things to do. Take a trolley to the beach, arrange a winery tour, wander through town, book an in-room couple’s massage, and call it a romantic day (or two)!
