St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Boston by rcolonna

Boston, Mass.— Want to find the best place in the U.S. to celebrate on the day when anyone can temporarily claim Irish heritage? With a quarter of the population reporting Irish descent, Boston is repeatedly ranked No. 1 for St. Patrick’s Day festivities in this country.

While many other cities get into the Irish spirit in a big way—both Chicago and San Antonio dye their downtown rivers green—Boston features an entire week of events that draw more than 50,000 visitors.

Boston held the first St. Patrick’s Day celebration in the U.S. in 1737, and the festivities grew into tradition. The city’s parade is one of the largest in the country, and a good-natured political roast held over breakfast is televised to 4 million viewers. So if you can’t make it to Ireland, Boston is the next best place on this side of the pond—and maybe mix in some beans with your corned beef and cabbage.
