DESTINATION: Climbing the Capitol Steps in Kansas

Kansas State Capitol

Kansas State Capitol by Steve Crecelius

Topeka, Kan.—There’s something compelling about climbing big structures. Maybe it’s the view, or maybe it’s the challenge of the stairs. In Kansas City, the climb to the top of the National World War I Museum‘s Liberty Memorial tower is rewarded with a downtown vista. A climb to the top of Lady Liberty in New York hasn’t been permitted since 9/11 (although that prohibition is now being reconsidered). Now, however, you can tackle a new climb—opened just a few months ago—to the top of the Kansas State Capitol building in Topeka. The 296 steps lead up into the dome itself and then outside. The best part: it’s free. — Laurie Borman
